**Tencent Unaffected by US AI Chip Export Ban, Research Shows**
Recent research from the University of California, Berkeley, suggests that the US export ban on high-end chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) development has had little impact on Tencent, one of China’s largest tech companies. Despite the ban, Tencent seems to continue advancing its AI technologies, including its Hunyuan AI models.
The research team, led by Ritwik Gupta, analyzed publications from Tencent’s researchers, revealing that the company is still progressing in its AI capabilities, even amid the restrictions. This challenges the effectiveness of such export bans in hindering China’s AI development.
The US has imposed export bans on advanced chips that are essential for training AI systems, aiming to limit the technological advancements of Chinese companies like Tencent. However, the new findings suggest that these sanctions may not be sufficient to slow China’s rapid progress in AI.
The study highlights that Tencent’s AI development efforts are continuing at pace, despite restrictions, and even stricter bans might not have a significant effect. This poses important questions for future international technology policies and the global race for AI supremacy.
